On Thursday 22 August, Petra Christian University proudly hosted the Falling Walls Lab Indonesia 2024. This year’s event, the 9th edition of this prestigious international science competition organised by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in Indonesia, was a milestone as it was held in Surabaya for the first time.

Falling Walls Lab provides a prestigious platform for the brightest minds to present their breakthrough ideas in a concise three-minute pitch. Each year, the best regional innovators are selected to go through to the global finals in Berlin on 7 November. This global stage offers unparalleled opportunities for networking, collaboration and recognition in the quest to be crowned a breakthrough winner.

This year, the competition extended its reach to East Java, reflecting Surabaya’s role as a major scientific hub. Petra Christian University (PCU) hosted and co-organised the competition, with a dedicated group of DAAD and German alumni and enthusiastic university management.

With over 100 applications from diverse fields including economics, business, agriculture, engineering, medicine and life sciences, the competition attracted a wide range of participants from across Indonesia and beyond, including the Philippines. This year’s top 16 finalists presented exceptional innovation and creativity.
