Empowering Educational Leadership: VALERIA Program Aims to Transform Vocational Higher Education in Indonesia

© DAAD
Politeknik Caltex Riau and Universitas Pembangunan Jaya join forces to spearhead VALERIA (Vocational Higher Education Transformation in Indonesia), an initiative aimed at fostering leadership capacity within Indonesia’s vocational higher education institutions.

With a keen eye on the evolving educational landscape, VALERIA will address pressing concerns within Indonesia’s higher education sector. This comprehensive program seeks to address the complex intricacies of higher education policy, ensuring quality benchmarks, strategic positioning, and effective human resource management.

Supported by the esteemed German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in collaboration with the University of Potsdam, VALERIA stands as a beacon of commitment to advancing educational leadership in Indonesia.

Overview of VALERIA:

This transformative program, funded by the DAAD as a 2023-2024 DIES National Multiplication Training (NMT) initiative, is coordinated by the Center for Quality Development (ZfQ) at the University of Potsdam.

VALERIA targets leaders in higher education, particularly in the vocational sector, who may lack formal training and experience in managing higher education institutions. This gap often prolongs the journey of institutional transformation. The program is strategically designed to accelerate the capacity building of these leaders, with the goal of accelerating the quality of vocational higher education across Indonesia.

Objectives and Structure:

Twenty-four leaders from a variety of institutions, each in a different leadership role, are carefully selected to participate in this two-phase program. Sessions are designed to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and reflective learning environment.

Program objectives include:

  • Provide insights into current issues in the Indonesian higher education landscape and their relevance to participants’ roles.
  • Equipping leaders with essential soft skills for effective institutional management and performance improvement.
  • Provide practical skills to navigate evolving higher education policies and enhance project management skills through case studies.
  • Disseminate information on available funding opportunities for institutional capacity building.

Challenges Addressed:

The disparity in quality among vocational higher education institutions, especially within the private sector, poses a significant challenge. Leaders lacking formal training and experience in higher education management face obstacles in elevating institutional quality, thereby elongating the transformation process.

VALERIA’s strategic approach is to accelerate the capacity building of these leaders with a view to improving the overall quality of vocational higher education institutions across Indonesia, especially those outside Java and Sumatra.

This initiative serves as a catalyst for progress, aiming to empower leaders and bridge the quality gap between institutions, ultimately contributing to the overall advancement of the educational landscape.
